Stop putting it off, will you?

You keep telling yourself that you’re going to start a niche site this year.

That you’re finally going to take control of your income.

But you never do it, do you?

Well, today is the day, my friend.

It’s time to step beyond that crippling fear of failure.

To say goodbye to the “One day..” and “When I get the time…” excuses and you actually do what you said you were going to do.

In this article, I’m going to show you how to set up a profitable niche site in 2017.

All for less than a round of drinks with your friends or a meal at a restaurant.

1781 niches [new]

1. Choosing Your Niche

Your niche should be something you’re interested in.

You’re going to have to invest lots of time and energy and money into this site over the next few years.

So, it’s important you’re at least vaguely interested in the subject.

For example, Jawad writes over on his niche site, Writing My Destiny, because he’s passionate about it.

That’s why he’s been able to keep the site going for 3+ years.

My new site, Deutschified, is easy for me to work on because I’m learning German and have moved to German.

It’s important not to chase money.

For example, so many new niche marketers hear about a site like Pinch of Yum that make over $30,000 per month, and decide they want to start a food blog…

pinch of yum june

…despite the fact the last time they actually cooked anything was back in the summer of 2006.

I find choosing a niche becomes really easy when you go back through your recent purchases online. For example, my Amazon right now looks a lot like this:

delivered amazon

And that’s just one of many books, podcasts and online courses I’ve purchased.

Just think of all the product reviews and recommendations I can create!

But if you’re really stuck for a niche site idea, you can always download Stuart’s 1781 Profitable Niche Site Ideas right here.

Or why not pick up a copy of Stuart’s 7 step formula for finding profitable niches that you can dominate?

2. Setting Up Your Domain and Hosting ($3.49)

The go-to hosting for Niche site owners (and our mastermind members) is Bluehost.

Well, firstly their service is tailor made for niche marketers.

But, secondly, they let you choose your domain name and hosting in one go.

Meaning you’re able to get your niche site online in just a few minutes.

It was the favourite of Pat Flynn over at Smart Passive Income for many years (until his site got too big!) and it’s still who he recommends to all of his new recruits.

In this section I’ll walk you through exactly how to set it up.

Head over to the Bluehost website and click the Get started now button:

bluehost 2017

This will take you to a page where it asks you to sign up by choosing an existing domain, or by selecting a new domain.

choose domain
If you don’t have a domain in mind this is a really fun process.

You can choose a name based on the keywords that you want to focus on.

Or, you can be creative and come up with a brand name that’s easy to remember.

The brand name option is your best option as keyword based domain names tend to sound spammy.

And brand’s have much bigger potential in terms of how you can grow the site later.

It’s best to come up with about 10 to 15 domain names before you choose this.

Here is my exact list for coming up with Deutschified:

  1. ExpatsaroundGermany
  2. AnEnglishmansguidetoGermany
  3. TheUKgermanconnection
  4. Englishbytherhine
  5. learngermanwithjames
  6. howtomovetogermany
  7. Deutschified
  8. leichtdeutschleben
  9. movingtogermany
  10. britisharoundgermany

From there I chose the one that most stood out to me and provided me with the most flexibility.

I’d also recommend going for a .com suffix, but if you’re targeting a local audience, feel free to go for their .com equivalent.

Once you’ve entered your domain name, you’ll be asked to choose your package.

For a beginner the basic package is more than enough to get you started:

bluehost package

Then go ahead and choose your package on the next page and any extras that you might be looking for.

For example, as Search Engine Land writes here,

Google has been known to give Search Engine ranking boosts to websites with an SSL certificate.

choose extras

Finish off the process and…you’re done!

Yeah, that’s right. It was so damn simple.

Why had you even been putting it off?

And if you want to go the (recommended) route of adding WordPress to your site, you can follow this simple video from BlueHost themselves:

In the next section I’ll show you how to get a super cheap logo made for your site that doesn’t look like it’s super cheap.

You’ll be surprised how professional it looks most likely.

3. Creating A Logo For Your Site ($20)

Fiverr is a great place to get your logos made.

They’re always made professionally and cost between $5 and $20 depending on what package you get.

You can have your logo in just a few hours, or a maximum of three days, depending on who you go with:

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 08.56.47

But it can be quite hard to choose; after all, there are so many options!

It pays to do a little shopping around and find a style that you like.

My strategy is to look at some competitor websites, or your favourite sites, and see what style they’re using.

If multiple sites in your niche are using a similar style then it’s a safe bet to assume that’s what people in your niche are used to.

Or you can hover over a specific designer and see how many good reviews they have.

Like this one that has 896 five star reviews.

It’s safe to say they’ll be a good designer to use:

reviews fiverr

To get the best logo for your site and to save money the best strategy is to order logos from 3 different sellers who’s samples you like.

Give them all the EXACT same instructions on how you want your logo to look.

Be clear on what your site offers, whether you want just text or text and images, and what colours you want.

And send them example logos you like from other sites in your niche so they have a point of reference

And just order the absolute most basic $5 gig first no extras.

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 08.51.17

Once you have all 3 of your finished logos back pick the one you like best.

Then go back to the designer and get any changes you’d like to get made (this may cost extra depending on their terms so check before you order.

I recommend placing it on your site to see how it looks and getting feedback from your friends, family and niche (Facebook groups are a great place for this) so you’re 100% sure it works.

Then once you are 100% satisfied with the end product order the source files and any other essential extras you need from the Fiverr seller.

Don’t order any of this stuff upfront as if you end up with a logo you don’t want you’ve wasted extra money on it.

Here’s the finished product of a logo for my newest niche site:

deutschified logo

Not bad for $15 all in, and it’ll work for a long time to come.

4. Getting A WordPress Theme For Free ($0.00)

Did he just say free theme?

Yeah, I did.

Because you don’t need to pay for a WordPress theme to get your site off the ground.

You just don’t. It’s not necessary.

For example, when Jeff Goins launched his Coffee Snobber site in an attempt to make money from a hobby in just 48 hours, he used the standard WordPress theme to do it.

And, if you read the Gaps blog, Glen often points out that you can create a basic niche site using just a free WordPress theme.

And when you’re looking at how to build a profitable niche site, you should too.

Right now, you don’t know what the future of your brand holds.

And, you’re probably not that good at coding a site and a theme, either.

So why spend $60 on a theme right now?

There are tonnes of free themes in the WordPress database that you can download that look super professional but don’t break the bank.

Like this one I was able to use and put together in under 10 minutes…

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 10.05.35

Once your WordPress site is set up, all you need to do is head to your Dashboard and look for the Themes option on the side of the screen:

customise wp

On the next screen select the Add New option from the top of the page:

add new theme

And then you’ll find a whole database of new, free, themes you’re able to add to your site and customise:

If you’re adamant that you need a Premium theme, you can check out MyThemeShop where they have some free options of premium themes for you to work with.

But, if I’d recommend starting off like I’ve done above, and making a proper investment in a theme further down the line when you have some content to work with.

5. Mailing List (Free) ($0.00)

A good mailing list is the backbone of any niche site.

And, even in 2017, it continues to be one of the most valuable assets to your business.

But did you know that you can create your first list for absolutely free?

Well, with MailChimp, you can.

mailchimp home

When I reviewed all of the big players in Email Marketing for Matt Woodward, I found one epic thing:

You can start a mailing list for up to 2,000 people with MailChimp, and then when you’ve hit the 2000 limit, you can transfer the database for absolutely free to a different software.

Now MailChimp do not allow you to use affiliate links in your emails.

But, that’s not a problem (yet).

The idea here is that you can start building a list and get into the habit of sending emails, adding sign up boxes and interacting with your audience.

Then when you get over the 100/200 person mark, you can swap to a bigger mailing list that does allow you to send affiliate links, like Aweber.

6. Getting Set Up On Social Media ($0.00)

Damn, your site itself is pretty much complete, right?

You’ve got a:

  • Domain
  • Hosting package
  • Logo
  • Theme
  • Mailing List

All you need now is a way of getting it out there.

And, with these free tools, that’s going to be super easy.

Now I won’t teach you to suck eggs, you know you need to go and set up free social media profiles for your niche site, like this Facebook page:

deutschified facebook

After doing some research with CoSchedule, I’d recommend you just focus on one channel right now.

And, honestly, Facebook will probably bring you the best return on time investment.

For example, take a look at this data from Roman Fitness Systems:

Jewelry Affiliate Programs: An Affiliate Marketer's Best Friend?

This week's niche is for the ladies (and men) who like bling! Jewelry affiliate programs can be lucrative, and you’ll be surprised at how huge the market is for this niche no matter how many $$$ people spend for a piece of jewelry.

For example, take the jewelry affiliate websites Jewelry Notes and Beyond 4Cs. Based on SimilarWeb reports, both these sites receive more than 100k monthly views.

Although we cannot really estimate a website’s income based on the traffic report alone, this data indicates that the demand for jewelry affiliate programs is huge.

Is This a Niche to Last Forever?

As always, we look at Google Trends to see how popular our keyword term (“jewelry” this time) is in online search:

For the past five years, the term "jewelry" has remained highly consistent in terms of search. Similarly, on social media, articles on jewelry are extremely popular. The screenshot below from BuzzSumo shows the top three most shared jewelry articles on social media sites:

You probably noticed that the top three articles above are written on similar topics. Looking at these results can guide us on which sub-niche to cover with a jewelry affiliate website.

Definition and Scope

Know Your Niche and Market

There isn't much to explain about this niche, since the word “jewelry” is crystal clear to all of us. But like many other niches, the jewelry niche is huge, and it is best to have a sub-niche.

Zooming in on a sub-niche helps us focus and develop content around a certain topic only. This strategy is particularly helpful when it comes to targeting the right market. The more specific you are with your sub-niche, the easier it will be for you to target your audience.

So for the jewelry niche, I chose to focus on diamonds as my sub-niche. My reasoning was fairly simple: I based my choice on popularity.

When we talk about jewelry, one of the things that usually pops into our heads is a diamond. Diamonds are so popular that people often use them in metaphors, symbolism, and such famous lyrics as “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” and, more recently, "Shine bright like a diamond."

Before proceeding to any further research or action, it is very important that you know your chosen niche or sub-niche well. Spending some time defining and getting to know your niche is crucial and will make keyword research, content creation, and marketing much easier.

Keyword Research

Digging for Diamonds

There is more than one way to do keyword research. You’ve probably noticed this in my previous NOTW posts, wherein I’ve been showing you different ways to find your target keywords.

There is no right or wrong way to do keyword research. You can use whichever process you are comfortable with. That’s fine.

If you are new to keyword research, you can use the simplified steps below as a starting point:

1. Find seed keywords

Seed keywords are keywords you input in a keyword tool. Your seed keyword is always your starting point for more keyword ideas.

Since our sub-niche is about diamonds, we can use that as our seed keyword. There are several useful tools that you can use for this step:

One of my most used tools when seeding for keywords. This tool provides a lot of keyword suggestions that are based on search engine results. You have the option to customize your search by language. You can also search for keywords used in the images, news, and shopping sections of search engines and keywords used on YouTube.

The tool is very straightforward. Just key in your seed keyword, customize your search, and then press the suggest button. Here is a screenshot showing partial results from my search:

Google Trends

This tool not only shows you the search trend of a given keyword but also provides you with the top and rising keyword results in Google. When researching the word "diamond," I found out that this term is too generic for Google Trends, so I searched for “diamond ring” instead. Below the page, you can see other keyword terms under the "related topics" and "related queries" sections:

Google Search

This is not really an official tool but since Google search is so sleek, you can actually use the search box as a source for other keyword terms. The Google search box provides you with keyword/phrase suggestions based on what people are searching for. You can see from the screenshot below the other terms suggested by Google:

2. Research the competition

Once you have completed your keyword list, the next step is to determine how competitive your target keywords are.

You can check the keyword competition through AffiloTools. Here is a quick guide on how to use it for keyword research.

It is quite easy to see the keyword competition in AffiloTools. In the screenshot below, the competition column provides you with the percentage for keyword competitiveness. Each percentage also corresponds to a certain color: red for high competition, orange for medium competition, and green for low competition.

The higher the competition is, the more challenging it is to rank for that keyword. In AffiloTools, the competition data is based on the number of advertisers bidding for that keyword. Even if the data is not based on organic results, you can still use this for SEO. If the competition is higher for paid search, it generally means that the keyword converts well.

If you want to know the competition for organic search, you can use Traffic Travis. Here’s how to use Traffic Travis for keyword competition.

Just like AffiloTools, you can easily see the keyword competition in Traffic Travis. Under Research > Keywords, each keyword is provided with a percentage for AdWords competition and is grouped by low, medium, or high ad competition.

If you use the SEO > Competition tool, you can also get organic SEO competition ratings ranging from easy to extremely difficult, which is even more valuable.

3. Double check keyword in Google search

Once you have gathered the competition data for your keywords, the next step entails installing an SEO plugin for your browser. For this step, I use MozBar.

Once MozBar is installed and activated, I manually enter my keywords in Google search one at a time to check the top 20 sites that are ranking for that keyword. You should see something like this:

The MozBar will help you analyze your competition more by providing you with important ranking information for each website found in SERPs such as Page Authority (PA), Domain Authority (DA), and link analysis. You can use these data to weigh how much competition there is for the top 20 websites ranking in Google search.

Jewelry Affiliate Programs

A Gold Mine for Affiliates

The ClickBank Marketplace has some affiliate programs, but none like the ones listed here. Most of the affiliate programs in the jewelry niche in ClickBank are those on how to create jewelry. The gravity and commission on these products are not as attractive as the ones below.

Kay Jewelers

1. Kay Jewelers

Kay Jewelers is a sister company of Sterling Jewelers, Inc. The company started 90 years ago as a small shop in Pennsylvania, selling eyeglasses, silverware, and electric razors on top of jewelry. Kay offers personalized jewelry, watches and other accessories on their website.

Marketing Methods

How to Shine in This Niche

There are a plenty of ways to build links to your site and drive traffic to it. You can try a few and immediately get results… if you're lucky.

Most of the time, though, you will need to try most, if not all, of them to see which strategy works the best for your site. This is one of the reasons why you need to draft a link-building strategy while still in the site-building process. This way, you will be able to jump right into it as soon as the site is up.

In this section, I won’t draft a list of marketing strategies for you; instead, I will discuss several important factors that you should be looking at when it comes to marketing your website. I believe that any marketing method out there (as long as it follows Google’s quality check) is effective in its way. However, every niche and every website also has its own sort of formula to success and this includes the right combination of marketing strategies, be they free or paid.

1. Volume of traffic

This is the one factor that determines the fate of your website. Any marketing method will only be successful if you can get traffic from it. And by traffic, I meant not hundreds but thousands of visitors to your website. A few visits and clicks to your page each day won’t get you any conversions. You need to target more than that to earn money from your affiliate links.

2. Quality content

This applies to both one-page and multi-page sites. The quality of content does not depend on the total number of words on a page. You need to do more than just that.

Take as much time as you need in research, specifically about knowing your niche and your target market. Once you have the right information, you can easily plan your content. A good article should be able to satisfy your readers, answering all their questions and even more, to the point that they do not have to go back to Google search and look for other sources.

3. Invest in SEO

Not everyone likes to do SEO, simply because it requires loads of work and takes time to produce results. However (and this is based on my experience), SEO is worth all the time and effort it takes. The traffic you get from search results lasts a long time, unlike that from paid ads, which only produce spikes in traffic while you pay for them.

Traffic from search engines is cost-effective because once your page ranks in the top SERPs, you get good traffic, and this will continue even if you are not spending any more time on ranking these pages.

4. Be consistent

Probably everyone (including myself) has a problem with consistency. But that’s okay. We’re just humans and we need constant reminders to be productive at work— and not just be busy!

I believe that affiliate marketing success has a lot to do with consistency. Building, marketing, and maintaining a website is challenging. There are ups and downs to affiliate marketing but no matter what, we must always be consistent with what we do. If things are not going well with our marketing efforts, we should still strive to work harder and find ways to solve the challenges we face. Do not be lazy, strive to be consistent, and always think of the end goal.

Jewelry Affiliate Programs

Shiny Prospects or a Dull Future?

.table-aff th img { border:0; padding:0; -moz-box-shadow: none; box-shadow: none; margin-right: 0; width:50px; } .table-aff td, .table-aff th { text-align:center; border-bottom:1px solid #eaeaea; } .table-aff td.striped { background:#f2f2f2; } .table-aff tr.signup a { font-size:10px; text-transform:uppercase; } .table-aff .commision { font-size:10px; color:#999; }

The commissions from these jewelry affiliate programs are truly promising. There's a huge potential to earn here, but you need to be up for the challenge.

Make sure you do your research and have a list of jewelry sites you can use as resources. Draw up a rough sketch of how you will go about your link building and inbound marketing for your jewelry site. After all, luck favors the prepared.

With the help of some geniuses I have put together a tool that will show you quickly and easily the exact impact on your account!

What Would Have Been The Impact For Me?

For Nov & Dec Only I Would Have Had a 24% Drop in Earnings!

Amazon Affiliate Program Change Earnings Impact

Find out how much your earnings will be impacted by, it takes under 5 minutes and you can stop guessing at the impact!

This post and tool will show you the exact impact these changes will have for you and your site and hope will add some data to the discussions which are occuring online now!

Amazon Affiliate Program Change:

On Feb 23rd Amazon announced a very big change to the Amazon Associate program. Moving forward instead of having a tiered commission structure people now will have a flat structure defined by category and not related to the volume they drive.

From – https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/help/operating/policies#Associates Program Fee Statement

Variable Standard Program Fee Rates

Amazon Associate Commissions Old

With a very limited segment of categories at a lower commission…

Amazon Associate Category Commissions

Amazon Associate Commissions as of March 1st 2017

Amazon Affiliate Commissions New March 1 2017

So the bottom line is that many products will now get a flat 4% vs what might have been 8.50% if you were doing substantial volume.

So How Will this Affect You and Each of Your Sites?

Fee Change Calculator Tutorial:

Now that you know what the change is… the potentially million dollar question (if your site is big enough) is what will be the change to your earnings?

This tool will allow you to upload your data from your Amazon Associates account and determine what your earnings would be under the old vs new commission structures.

You will see if this policy was in place for whatever time period you select what your earnings would have been.

  • Step 11 – See Your Results & Analzye!

Amazon Affiliate Program Change Earnings Impact

Who Will This Change Help?

  • This will help the little guy starting out in some niches since now from day 1 you have the same earning potential as much larger sellers.
  • Hopefully this will help everyone by having another player become more competitive in terms of a true Amazon Affiliate Alternative (jet/walmart?)
  • Affiliates in Arkansas (random but Arkansas residents can now participate)

Who Will This Change Hurt?

  • Any seller heavily focused on a specific niche… toys or PC Components
  • Buyers/Sellers who just either bought or sold a winner or a loser with this shakeup will be impacted
  • From the math it looks like most large Amazon Affiliate site owners will take a hit.

How Will This Impact Website Valuations?

Who knows, we will have a month where this gets talked about and the sale of site will likely slow then a process for establishing fair value (hopefully this tool will help that) and things will be back to normal soon I predict.

I predict many of the brokerages will have content coming out soon commenting on how they will handle this change (EmpireFlippers, QuietLight, FEInternational etc).

5 Clever Ways to Benefit From This Change:

First, don’t over-react. Things will be back to normal soon and even though I believe this will ultimately take money out of affiliates pockets and into Amazons the change is not substantial enough that there will be a mass exit from Amazon Associate Sites.

Additionally whenever there are changes it provides a unique opportunity. Here are 6 clever ways you can benefit from this change…

  1. Focus your websites content on products related to your site that get a higher commission. If you run a video game review website that makes money via Amazon start focusing content around digital video games and make 10X more for each dollar spent! (great time to signup to a content service that does this keyword research for you!)
  2. If you are an FBA seller than position your product into a category with a higher commission so it will be easier to recruit affiliates. For example a toy makeup kit could (maybe?) be luxury beauty product (depending on being a gated category) changing the attractiveness of an affiliate promoting it from 2% to 10%! (obviously do at your own risk since I am sure Amazon will crack down on people abusing this). This example is a little extreme but look at the example below regarding standing desks attachments being furniture vs PC Components.
  3. Using the tool I have provided here spot an arbitrage opportunity with a website for sale that will perform better moving forward. For example if there is a home / lawn & garden niche site that was only at the 6.5% commission level it would likely now have most products at the 8% level. If you can identify those sites that are selling at a discount relative to expected future earnings you can scoop a deal at an 18% discount.
  4. Buying sites where you know there is a good alternative monetization method. For example if you have a PC component website and have a method of monetizing the site that outperformed Amazon then there will likely be Amazon Affiliate site owners who would be happy to sell at a discount. For example if you run an ecommerce shop in the IPhone/PC Cable space you can likely buy some websites that will drive traffic to your store at a substantial discount to what you could have 1 week ago. This applies for people in the FBA space wanting to pick up an affiliate site to drive sales to their physical product, those websites may have just gotten cheaper for the same traffic depending on the niche.
  5. If you are building a new site (or getting an Amazon Affiliate Site built for you) focus on niches that have products that get a higher commission. This will be a temporary opening as others will do the same thing driving up competition for the keywords in the higher commission categories of Amazon.
  6. For most people this is one action they should do! Review all your most important pages to see if the product you are promoting is in a low commission category vs a high commission category. For example you will be 4X better off promoting a standing desk converter in the furniture category then a standing desk in the PC components category. For example look at the 2 products below they look similar but on one you will earn a 2% (or 4%) commission and on the other you will earn an 8% commission on (Furniture).

How Will This Impact Your Site?

Please use the tool and comment below/take the survey on how this will impact your site! Do you have any ideas on how to benefit from this change?

Are PBNs Working in 2017 – Case Study and Test Results

So the big question…. ARE PBNs STILL WORKING IN 2017???

See the case study process and results below and how I generated 800 organic visitors in a day!

This post is a case study aimed at identifying the potential power of expired domains with actual traffic data and link metrics revealed.

Some of the results are pretty surprising…

PBNs have been a very controversial subject to talk about but have also been the most systematic way of ranking a website I have found.

What is a PBN? A PBN is a private blog network where we find expired domains that still have quality links pointing to them, build a similar website on the expired domain and link to your money site. The end result is you can create network of high authority and relevant sites linking back to your money site and increasing its rankings in Google.

2 News Events on PBNs in 2017

So far in 2017 there have been 2 PBN news worthy events from Google related to PBNs…

  1. Google Resets Backlink Profile on Expired Domains – This one was potentially the big one and the reason I increased the size of this test. In a video John Mueller from Google came out and said that Google could reset the backlink profile on a domain when it was renewed.

Great Article on this video – http://fatjoe.co/googles-john-mueller-put-an-end-to-pbns/

2. Feb 7th Google Update – This one had people initially running for the hills thinking it was a target on PBNs. I saw a slight increase in my normal weekly PBN deindexation but no increase in money sites being negatively affected. Others wrote in with similar questions and I struggled to provide an answer as to what I thought the update was as it didn’t initially look like the PBN targeted update people were thinking it was but I didn’t have a great answer as to what it was. Lucky for us there are smarter people with access to even more data that dug into the update and came to a conclusion that is consistent with what I saw in my smaller sample size (update targetting content quality)…

a. Glenn Gabe – http://www.gsqi.com/marketing-blog/google-algorithm-update-february-7-2017/

b. Search Metrics – http://blog.searchmetrics.com/us/2017/02/15/google-phantom-5-update/

”So we are left thinking this is probably one of those  or something new, but not related to links as I said originally but more related to content quality.”

Barry Schwartz at SERoundTable

Question to Answer as Part of my PBN and Expired Domain Case Study:

So I have devised a test to hopefully show what matters most in leveraging the power of expired domains and PBNs in 2017. Ultimately I will try and answer are PBNs working in 2017 and what matters the most to make them work.

Although my test will hopefuly be insightful I have no illusions that it would hold up to a “scientific review” feel free to make whatever conclusions from the data you see fit.

PBN Test Method

If the 2 updates were targeting PBNs then a website built on an expired domain should not be able to receive the ongoing benefit of the links and SHOULD NOT achieve abnormal early rankings.

By finding a mix of domains and building a quality site on them if they perform better then we should expect for a new site it is a sign that we are receiving a benefit from the old backlinks. So if the sites I build rank quickly then PBNs are working, if they don’t rank quickly then PBNs are not working.

Steps I followed…

  1. Find ExpiredDomains that meets my metrics here
    • Most Important QC Check
      • Real & Relevant Backlinks (the website has links from a “real” site)
      • Real & Relevant Website (the website was a “real” site)
    • PA > 20
    • DA > 15
    • CF > 15
    • TF > 15
    • Will meet 3 out of the 4 metrics above
  2. Build Relevant Site With Great Content – Identify similar topics that the site was talking about and then use the process at ContentRefined to get great quality articles created that will reliably outperform the competition.

NOTE – I do not recommend doing a complete rebuild and re-using the content.

Test Results

For this test in January I purchased 5 domains using basically the same metrics as I sell here with a spread of metrics and then had ContentRefined produce articles for them targeting content similar to what was on the site before (without duplicating).

The table below shows the 5 expired domains that were registered, their metrics and the resulting organic traffic to each of those sites after relevant, high quality low competition keyword content was placed on the site.

What is very interesting is when you combine these numbers you can really see the result from week 1-3

From the data there seems to be a 2 week sandbox for an expired domain which is A LOT shorter then we seem to get for new domains.

Analytics screenshots showing organic traffic.

Site 1: Instant Steady Organic Traffic

Site 2: 800 organic visitors per day within 1 month!

Site 3: Flat for 2 Weeks the Moderate Traffic

Site 4: Stable Traffic After 2 Weeks

Site 5: Spike in Traffic after ~2Weeks

So What Does This All Mean? 5 Key Takeaways!

Relevant and Quality PBNs are the Key!

If you are going to decide to help your site rank with PBNs the takeaway from these updates and my test is…

  1. Expired Domains and PBNs are still VERY VERY powerful! 800 unique visitors per day within 3 weeks for one of the sites (not normal!)!
  2. There seems to be a 2 week sandbox from the time a site is rebuilt before Google starts showing it some love.
  3. Metrics Matter – The 2 worst performing sites out of the test were also the 2 lowest metrics. Having these 2 low metrics sites was intentional as it helps to show that the boost in traffic is due to the more powerful backlinks for the other 3 sites still helping the sites in the eyes of Google.
  4. Relevant Rebuilds are Key– The content on the PBN site needs to be relevant to the expired site!
  5. Quality – Google continues to raise the bar on the content quality for both money sites and PBNs and if you want a money site or PBN site to last you need to build with quality in mind. Decent quality content and a site that looks real is important!

A couple questions…

Should you build a money site on a PBN? I certainly plan to turn a couple of the sites above into a Money Site using the team at I certainly plan to turn a couple of the sites above into a Money Site using the team at BrandBuilders.io to create an awesome affiliate site. However, in general I do not recommend planning on starting out building a money site on an expired domain because although all 5 of these that I purchased in January performed well it is not always that case and the domain could be penalized without you knowing it. What I recommend is building test sites and then executing the 301 Building Block strategy if you want to get the benefit of an expired domain direct to your money site.

Are these results normal? Definitely not, I am not 100% sure what the reason was that some of these sites just exploded in traffic. I like it! A big part was focusing using the contentrefined method on targetting highly related, high search volume but super low competition keywords and then methodically ensuring we had better content then anything on the first page. I will be doing more testing because getting a 3 week old site to 800 unique visitors a day is EXCITING!

Want to run a similar test? You can by doing the following…

  1. Do it yourself option – Find a domain and build a PBN yourself and then do fantastic keyword research and create great content. Below are the giant tutorials I have shared on this site to show you exactly how I do these activities.
  2. Done for You OptionGet a PBN built and then upgrade the content with the ContentRefined service.

Hope this data was interesting and if you execute this test on your own please share the data with me!

Plus-Size Clothing Affiliate Programs for Extra-Large Earnings!

2016 is now behind us, but the events the past year continue to reverberate as we push into 2017. New presidents, dead musicians and the first plus-size model on the cover of Swimsuit Illustrated.

Because that's how life works; sometimes it's a step forward, sometimes it's two steps backward.

I'll let you decide on the presidents and the musicians, but a plus-size model on the cover of a popular magazine is definitely a step forward.

It may seem superficial, but this is a beacon to the millions of women who wear sizes 14 and up. It means recognition that not all women are "angels." There are curvy vixens and voluptuous divas who wear fashionable clothes in bigger proportions.

The plus-size clothing niche has been swimming in the back of my mind for quite some time now. As someone who shops in the plus-size section myself, you could say this niche is really close to home. It's something I'm definitely interested in, and I have thought about having my own website to my name like GabiFresh.com or JayMiranda.com, but does it have earning potential? Will it be worth the effort?

Fashionably Curvy

Studies show that the average American woman wears a size 14.

In 2010, Americans alone spent US$186 billion on online purchases, $12 billion of which went to clothing. This article on Business Insider states that the average American woman is a size 14, and that in 2012, the plus-size clothing niche contributed $18 billion to the $108 billion apparel industry.

The plus-size clothing industry has grown since, and generated over US$20B in sales last year as shown in the Statista graph below.

Plus Size Clothing Industry Statista Results

There is clearly a market for plus-size clothing, and more and more retailers are stepping up to provide fashionable and good-fitting clothes to the plus-size market.

We know there's a market. Now, how tough is the competition?

Extra-Large Keywords Equal Massive Competition

Plus-size clothing is a huge industry under an even bigger mother niche: the fashion industry. Highly competitive keywords are on full display.

If you do not believe the statistics, then the keyword research will convince you that this niche is popular in its own right. Most of the keywords in this niche have high competition: "plus size fashion," "plus size clothing," even specific keywords such as "skinny jeans for plus size women."

Plus Size - Traffic Travis Results

Long-tail keywords have low competition in this niche, but they tend to have low monthly search values.

How to wear skinny jeans plus size - Traffic Travis Results

Even on AffiloTools, the results are the same. Enter any keyword that has to do with "plus-size," any piece of clothing added with the same main keyword, and you'll find keywords that are mostly high competition.

Plus-Size Clothing - AffiloTools Keyword Search Results

You can target information keywords like "best jeans for large women" or "perfect bikinis for the curvy lady." These long-tail keywords don't show large monthly search values, but they are targeted so you still have a chance of reaching your target market without having to go head-to-head with the competition.

This is also where Ubersuggest.io and similar keyword scrapers come in handy. You can get more keyword variations on those sites. It doesn’t mean there will be keywords with better monthly search values or competition, but there will be a lot of keyword variations to choose from. These keywords can also give you an idea of what articles to write on your website.

Plus-Size Clothing Affiliate Programs

There are a lot of plus-size clothing affiliate programs to join, but commissions are on the leaner side.

I have been working with the ClickBank Marketplace long enough to gauge whether they carry affiliate products for a particular niche. I had a hunch I wouldn't find any plus-size clothing affiliate programs in there, and turns out I was right. Get Noticed in a Big Way

There are plenty of plus-size fashion blogs and websites you'll compete with. Make sure you're armed with the right link-building strategy.

So you have your site up, your content published, and your affiliate offers in place. The next step is to drive traffic to your site. There are several link-building and inbound marketing methods you can use to do this.

It's best to have a link-building or marketing strategy in place before you complete the site, and preferably even before you get the site started. This strategy will be of great use as it allows you to move smoothly from site building to link building without losing precious time.

Below are a few methods you can try to drive traffic to your site:

Press Releases

Press releases have always been a great marketing tool for businesses announcing a newsworthy event to the public, like a big sale, or the launch of a new product. You can write a press release on the site you're promoting and then share it on website like PRLog.org.

Press releases work like article submission. You submit your press release to sites like PRLog.org to get picked up by journalists, bloggers, and webmasters who will, in turn, feature it on their own sites. You build links and drive traffic to your site.

It's important for a press release to be both well-written and SEO-friendly so it gets picked up by both readers and search engines. You can find some good tips in tutorials, like this one from SEOPressor.

Link Baiting

Link baiting is writing an article, or publishing content on your site, that refers to or mentions another website (usually a reference). Before or after publishing the content, you get in touch with the webmaster or blogger of the site you referred to and let them know you referenced their site in your content.

That's the bait, and if they take it, then it means a backlink and a name drop for you.

It's not as simple as it sounds, though, and Moz.com has 10 examples of extraordinary link baiting you can use as a guide on how to properly (and effectively!) do it.

Social Media Marketing

This infographic by Marketing Zeus shows that a large percentage of clothing shoppers find inspiration, compare prices and look for promos online.

It is only natural that people looking for great deals and fashion trends will check out social media sites where there are other people doing the same and sharing information.

Pinterest is a great place to promote your site for this niche. You can share fashion trends there as well as any special offers. There are guides on how to properly promote your website on Pinterest, like this one from Social Media Examiner: 6 Ways to Use Pinterest to Promote Your Brand.

Plus-Size Clothing Affiliate Programs: Hefty Earnings?

"Bigger" doesn't always mean "better." Competition in the plus-size niche is considerably tougher.

I have been looking at this niche for quite some time now. Based on what I've gathered, it doesn't appear to be a big winner as far as niches go, but it's still something I would go into given the time, simply because I find it interesting.

This is a fun niche for any affiliate marketer interested in fashion. The commissions aren't that much, and you'd have to deal with plenty of competition. But you'll definitely have fun sharing your own fashion sense within the community.

It's always a case of whether you think something is worth going for and investing time and effort into. If promoting plus-size clothing appeals to you, and you don't mind putting in the effort (and it will be enormous given the competition in this niche!), then by all means!

Be sure to do your homework, though, and have a solid marketing and link building strategy. You'll need all the traffic you can get.

I hope you enjoyed this week's niche! If you have a niche you want to see featured here, then please let us know in the comments. Make sure to share this week's Niche of the Week using the Share buttons below!

January Income Post – Goals for 2017

In this income post I layout the goals for 2017 for my business and what parts of my business will be getting my focus and energy!

January was by the numbers not the start to the year I was looking for but as we were still getting a lot of the orders from a massive November wrapped up it is understandable.

Many new tests are looking like they are winners while several cash cows of my businesses seemed to stumble a bit in January.

The Business “Divisions” For My Online Business:

  1. Money Site Portfolio
  2. AuthorityWebsiteIncome Blog
  3. Services – Web Development, Content Marketing & Link Building:
  4. Amazon FBA Business
    • Brands 1-6 – All have specific targets for 2017
    • ListingEagle – Amazon FBA Hijacking and Suppression Monitoring
  5. Put Outside Capital to Work Efficiently in the Online Asset Space

Key Successes

  1. New Website Growth Strategy – Several sites I have been building have been having some great success out of the gate! I am looking to continue testing this out myself and then scaling it!
  2. ContentRefined.com – I have not had a business grow this quickly to a monthly recurring revenue of 6 figures a year before. The feedback is continuing to be great and the quality of the articles plus the ranking results clients are getting has me very optimistic that the 10 year time horizon we have for this business is solid. Controlling costs as we scale and not sacrificing on quality is the ongoing battle but for this business we are happy to give up some margin to ensure quality content is provided to the clients.
  3. New Project Idea – There is one substantial new project which will setup BrandBuilders for some explosive growth while at the same time make a giant leap towards working to solve the problem of being able to put outside capital to work in the online space.

Key Failures

  1. Amazon FBA Account – My most promising Amazon FBA business had its account put under a velocity review.
  2. Time into Mortgage Crushing Challenge – This challenge is a key focus for this site and I did not put as much time into the project as I would have like in January.
  3. Slow Restart to the Year – Weaker Profit Month – It is always the case but this year it was a slower start to January with the first ½ of the month being very slow but then the second ½ and start of Feb picking backup to the pace both in terms of new business and effort that I am going after.

2017 Business Goals

Below is my businesses main goals for 2017…

Part 1 – Passive Authority & Niche Website Income Profit/Loss

3 Goals in 2016 for my Website Portfolio Business

  1. Everyone Win at the Mortgage Crushing Competition

Jan Update – This one has been fun to launch, the team at the office is working hard on building their websites. My site is off to a slower start but I am pushing hard on content and using my 301 building block strategy which involves buying expired domains, creating a silo on that domain and then moving it to my money site.

  • Traffic = 9
  • Earnings = 0

2. Buy 1 Site Per Month

Jan Update – 1 new website was purchased in January. It was a little higher a multiple then I would like but will be a nice addition to a new project I have on the go.

  • GOAL = 1 Website
  • ACTUAL = 1 Website

If any readers are looking to sell their profitable site(s) VERY QUICKLY let me know by emailing me. I can let you know in 12hrs if I am interested and complete the purchase in 24-48hrs – Sell Your Website FAST!

I have found the right sellers are those…

  • Looking to sell FAST (under 24hrs has been accomplished!) (shorter time for due diligence on my end increases risk for me)
  • Not wanting to spend a lot of time on the sales process (analytics and income proof is all I need)
  • SEO done to the site can be questionable and that increased risk will be reflected in the sales price
  • Site being associated with a banned Amazon Associate is still possible to sell (but STEEP discount!)
  • Understand that the benefits of the bullet points above means the sales multiple will be lower than if you went a more traditional route

If you have a profitable website you are looking to sell fast please let me know

Update for 2017 – Amazon FBA, SAAS or Larger Websites I Can Close on Quickly As Well – Contact Me Here

3. Scalable New Site Creation Strategy adds $5k to Portfolio

Jan Update – Some great progress here! Several sites have started to perform well that were brand new builds using a unique strategy. The goal of this strategy is to add $5k/month to the portfolio.

  • Traffic – 8,6952 visitors (all sites started in Dec or Jan – one example is shown below)
  • Earnings – $0 no monetization applied yet.

Jan Update – Great progress on some growth opportunities for what I am building from scratch. It is a LOT OF FUN to be back focusing on building some existing and new sites in my portfolio.

Part 2 – Authority Website Income Blog Profit/Loss

3 Goals in 2015 for AuthorityWebsiteIncome.com

  1. Post Once Per Week

Jan Update – This is always a tough one but I enjoy it! So this year I am GOING to hit my goal of one post per week.

  • Plan = 5
  • Actual = 5

2. Systematic Promotion of my Content and Building of my List

Jan Update – For the most part my strategy with my audience at AuthorityWebsiteIncome is to create content and then send out an email to my list… that it and its weak! Need to systematically promote it and work on building my audience.

3. Increased Intelligence with Email Automation

Jan Update – Similar to above the level of automation I apply to my list is very weak resulting in a very sub-optimal experience for people on my list.

Jan Update – Lots of work to do this year to hit this target! I will continue pushing!

Part 3 – Services Business Profit/Loss

  1. Systems First Focus

Jan Update – Great progress with all systems fundamentally in place for the services businesses and a good focus out all my staff’s weekly 1:1 meetings to review what system got created, improved or audited each week.

  1. LightningRank.com – Quality and Efficiency Improvements

Jan Update – With the Google update Jan 7 that impacted none of my money sites and only a handful of clients sites and the importance of relevancy we are uniquely positioned to continue to provide the best solution for people looking to rank their

website with a Private Blog Network.

Visit LightningRank.com for Link Building Services!

  1. ContentRefined.com – 20k MRR by June & 40k MRR by End of Year

Jan Update – What you might notice is that nowhere on this income report have I ever shared revenue for any services business. The reason I do for ContentRefined is because Maddie and I want the focus to be on providing an exceptional and consistent product. We won’t be able to grow our MRR without doing a fantastic job at providing great value to all our customers and as a result I am less focused on earnings from ContentRefined.

Visit ContentRefined.com for Content Marketing Services!

4. BrandBuilders.io Structurally Well Setup & New Offering Launched

Jan Update – Some great progress on this! There is a deal in the works that will be a win for everyone involved! In addition January saw the pre-launch of the Turnkey Affiliate Sites and some great work towards guest posts at Empire Flippers about how to scale an affiliate site.

Part 4 – Amazon FBA Business

  • Brand #1 – HG – Running Lean and Spinning off Cash
    • Jan Update – We pushed on this business to make it grow in 2016 but didn’t have a ton of success. The goal for 2017 is to run it lean and have it spin off cash!
  • Brand #2 – CF – Quarterly Dividends Ahead of Baseline
    • Jan Update – Great progress on this business with it now consistently turned around and performing ahead of baseline after taking an immediate hit when we purchased the business and it was performing at 20% of baseline initially. Now the first payments are getting ready to be sent.
  • Brand #3 – NT – Path To Strong Market Position and Successful Pillar Product
    • Jan Update – Despite some great feedback and rankings the sales are not what we want them to be. The product is great (by far the best) but the size of the market just may not be big enough. Of all businesses I really like the vision for this one!
  • Brand #4 – CF – Systematic Growth to $20k/month Profit
    • Jan Update – BIG SETBACK Amazon has put this account under review for a velocity review due to us wanting to get rid of some of our inventory before an order
  • Brand #5 – PC – Successful launch and $5k/month Business
    • Jan Update – This business has been slower than we would have liked but are happy with keeping our standards high on the product and have inventory on the way to Amazon. The site created to drive the traffic to this product is also continuing to perform well!
  • Brand #6 – SE – 4X Value Expansion with Dream Team!
    • Jan Update – I hope to be able to talk about this business and the team soon. We have a lot of hurdles to jump through and are working through them but if we can pull it off it has the makings of a huge opportunity. The idea is that this business is the evolution of the affiliate site to FBA model where a team of deep knowledge experts are invested and advise within their area of expertise.
  • ListingEagle.com – Hijack Monitoring Service
    • Jan Update – Continues to be slow to grow but very useful tool.

Overall it wasn’t a great month for the FBA portfolio with one big setback.

Part 5 – Put Outside Capital to Work Efficiently

I find the problem of being able to put capital to work in this space fascinating and I am looking to be a part of the solution that can address it.

More to come but if you are interested in what I have cooking I am always open to chat.

The simple math of buying an asset at 2X earnings and earning essentially a 50%/year return then add in business model innovation and growth (traffic/conversion) the potential is incredible. Plenty of risks but also lots of opportunity!

Overall Income Update

Original Monthly Net Income Target (original goal $15k/month reliable income by age 35)

  • Target Net Income = $10,400
  • Actual Net Income = $24,537
  • 2017 Average Net Income = $24,537

(don’t worry it looks worse than reality)

Gross revenue is a vanity number for my business and I do not share it.

Final Comments

Jan was a month where a lot of expenses from previous months sales hit and based on my not perfect accounting method it made it look like a bad month. Overall I am not worried, just a slow start to the month and a lot of expenses added together to give me a month that is less then ideal. Looking to bounce back BIG in February!

As is always the case I have no shortage of opportunities in 2017 and I plan to buid my team, work my ass off, leverage systems and maximize all opportunities while having fun (and doing as much skiing with my kids as possible).

Hope everyone is pumped for 2017!

The Day I Forgot My Sons Name – Work Life Balance and My New Schedule

The day I forgot my sons name was a wakeup call that my work/life balance, or whatever you want to call it, was seriously out of whack!

It was a few years ago and during one of my VERY busy times at my previous day job  (80+hrs/week for 2 months) my wife was 3 weeks from her due date with our first child and I was hoping to be done the project that had me busy before she popped.

We were woken up very early that it was go-time and baby was not waiting for 3 weeks and was on its way now.

It was an incredibly exciting day having our first child born! Even during that day there was still time I put into the day job with calls from work needed to keep the project moving in the field.

Doing a little work in the delivery room wasn’t the embarrassing part (although it should have been) the embarrassing moment/wake up call came the next day…

Everyone was doing well and I was heading back in to work with the intent of getting some critical information handed over to the team, grabbing my computer and heading back home to spend a couple days with my wife and son.

My plan was to slip into work quickly get done what was needed and get out.

However, as I rounded a corner several of the ladies on my floor swarmed asking questions, I got most of them…

“yes everyone is doing well”

“8lbs 4oz”

What is his name….

(oh crap – I draw a blank!)

So feebly I say…

“we haven’t named him yet”

A blatant lie, maybe it was the lack of sleep, maybe it was my wife convincing me she thought we were having a girl or maybe my mind being focused on the 10 critical things I wanted to get done quickly before getting home. But regardless of my weak excuses the fact is that in the first 24hrs of parenthood I had a serious parenting fail!

Reflecting on it shortly after it was clear that for me to be the parent I wanted to be devoting as much mental energy as I was to my day job would always leave me with less capacity then I wanted/needed for my family!

It is tough to say when the idea of working for myself running an online business became more than an idea and turned into an obsession but I think this point is likely as good any!

So ~3 years later I quit and am now running my online business full time. (full story here)

It didn’t happen overnight and took many years of working the schedule outlined below but the goal was achieved…

Day Job vs Full Time Online Entrepreneur Schedule:

Below is a side by side comparison of my schedule when I had my day job and now when I am working online full time.

I still work a lot of hrs but I am able to shift a good chunk of hours to spending time with my family in the afternoon to do fun activities!

Breaking down the hours by activity this is the result…

I don’t intend to say that my current schedule is better than my previous one for everyone or even that my current schedule is ideal for people. Many people would still think I work too much and don’t have enough fun/socialize time in there but for me the ability to have the freedom to design the schedule that is best for my family and me is a very clear improvement in quality of life!

If you are working towards a similar goal hopefully this post shows the level of effort that needs to be sustained and for how long to give you an idea that it won’t be easy but it is possible!
